When God Calls You To Write, Where Do You Begin?

When God calls you to something, do you immediately heed His calling and take the leap of faith, OR do you hide from it?

There’s a desire in your heart and a deep longing to see it used for your good and His glory. (Romans 8:28) But, what happens when you don’t know where to begin? What happens when the uncertainty and fears take stage-front instead of the calling you’ve been given? What happens when you simply don’t even try?

That’s where the mid-afternoon breeze is meeting me now. With each gust of the cool wind hitting my face, there are recollections from my past flooding through my mind. Suddenly I am acutely aware about all the times I had a deep nudging within my heart to put pen to paper but far too easily didn’t try. Year after year, I hid one of the things I truly longed to do.

And as each leaf falls from the trees now, I am reminded that a leaf falling to the ground is not without flight from the One who orchestrates the wind. This is where I learn that any missed opportunity, especially the ones the Lord prepares in advance, can be redeemed and restored. No matter how deeply you bury your talent, it can be unburied—it can take flight.

Although I know not where to go from here, I’d love to share with you where I started. I began simply by praying.

Dear Jesus,

You are the Author and Perfector of our faith. You go behind, beside, and before us establishing our steps. You are gifted in every way, and You’ve graciously given me this desire to write for You with such great hope to serve others with the words You speak through those that are called according to Your purpose. I know not what to write or where to start and humbly come before You seeking wisdom and guidance. “We have not because we ask not.” (James 4:2) This desire has been stirring within me for years, but I lacked asking You how to begin and where to begin—only understanding the “why.” It is for Your glory and the good of others. Please help me, Lord, seek You throughout the entire writing process. I cannot do this without You! (John 15:5) I confess that I have tried to do things on my own. I have run away and hidden beneath fear finding solace in the idolatry that comfort can quickly become. Please forgive me and help me to flee from this kind of comfort and complacency. Continue to search my heart, Lord, and examine my ways. I desire to follow You all the days of my life.

And so I begin Your work.

𝕩𝕠 Steph.

Ps. Friends, the wind will shift unexpectedly from time to time, but we can always trust where He is leading. May we stop running from our calling and allow Him to help us take flight. Until next time, friends. . .

About Me

Hi, I’m Jonah, I mean Stephanie—recently spit out of the belly of a whale and diving into His calling of writing that I should have stepped into so long ago. God walked me through a season of humbling myself and repenting. On the other side of surrender is where I found excitement to be stepping out in faith—writing was my Nineveh.

I am beyond grateful for an extremely gracious and merciful God that patiently brings His purposes back around. When God originally called me to write, I hesitated to begin. The uncertainty and fear made me question my own abilities. I didn’t know how to begin and feared what others would think. But deep down, I knew something special was waiting for me on the other side of the unknown. It was and is God—He is the God of my yesterdays, todays, and tomorrows. He led me to stop viewing His calling from the filter of the world and through the beautiful truth that “I can do nothing apart from Him.” (John 15:5) The beauty in this is that He orchestrates it, and He is with me through it all!

Now, I want to share this faith-filled journey with you. Join me by following my blog, where we’ll explore the transformative power of following His leading and uncovering the beauty of sharing our words with the world.
